Introduction to Why You Want to Go Into Advertising
Why Advertising is Amazing
Hi! I'm Maryellen! I grew up in Houston, Texas and am now a senior that is studying Advertising. I decided to study Advertising on a whim and didn't give much thought to it, I guess back then I just knew without really knowing.
Advertising is taught in Gaylord Hall
Going into Advertising has been one of the best decisions of my life. I get to interact with people all day while working toward a common goal. The great thing about Advertising is that it is usually held in such a fun environment. I am an Operations Director for Lindsey + Asp, the student-run agency on campus, and I couldn't think of a better environment to work in. People are creative, and a little weird and we get to come up with the grandest ideas that we actually implement in national campaigns.
Typically some of the qualities you find in someone in advertising can be seen as a weakness in other areas of work. A lot of us are ADHD, we talk too much and we really can't sit for too long without daydreaming. All of these qualities can be seen as advantages in the Advertising industry.
Another great thing about Advertising is there are so many different jobs you can utilize the skills you've gained while studying advertising. You don't necessarily have to go into advertising directly (even though there are plenty of different jobs in the actual industry) you can go into non-profits or own your own business. The possibilities are endless.
Like I said, choosing to study Advertising was the best decision of my life. I've met some of the most interesting people, I've gained confidence because of the skills I've acquired, and I have so many possible future paths laid out in front of me.
I've heard so much great stuff about Lindsey + Asp, Maryellen -- and wow, being the Operations Director means you know how it all works. That is fantastic experience to be able to get while you are in school. The power of creativity... practically applied! And I'm guessing the secret strengths you describe here for advertising would work in this class too. At least I hope so! Maybe some of the stories that you read or write for this class will resonate with a campaign you are working on. My favorite ads are the ones that tell a story... I wonder if we will see any good ad-stories for the Superbowl this weekend. Yes, I'm one of those people who watches the Superbowl for the ads... it's a proud moment for advertising creatives, getting so many of us to tune in and see what they have come up with year after year!
ReplyDeleteHey there Maryellen!
ReplyDeleteI am actually from Houston as well! I totally understand where you are coming from people with ADHD as I have ADD and it makes my engineering courses impossible to sit through. I am very glad that you found a major that you truly enjoy! I look forward to reading some of your work this semester!
Best,
Drew Fazzino
Hi Maryellen, I am from Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, but honestly Texas is starting to feel like a second family with a lot of my friends being from the Dallas/Fort Worth and Houston areas! I almost feel like an honorary Texan! My older sister works in Advertising and went to OU for undergrad, so it's really cool to see someone else interested in it, too! She works in NYC, so let me know if you ever need a contact there!
ReplyDeleteHi Maryellen,
ReplyDeleteAdvertising is definitely hard for me because I am not at all creative. Also, I am not good at persuasion haha! I love your passion for what you do! That is my reason for wanting to become a doctor. I love communicating with people and having that one-on-one patient interaction! What do you do as Operations Manager? Also, what do you want to do with your major since you talk about the endless possibilities? Good luck this semester!!
Hey, Maryellen!
ReplyDeleteI think it is awesome that you knew exactly what you wanted to study and know in general what you want to do with your life-wish I could say the same! Also, as an introvert, I am always fascinated by people who find interacting with people energizing and like to do it all day--human interaction wears me out after more than a few hours! I look forward to seeing all of the wonderful stories you will write this semester and good luck with your studies and beyond!
Hey Maryellen! It's so great that advertising has opened and is opening many doors for you. Coming from a pre-health background, I kind of wish I had the course load that you have. It definitely sounds more appealing in certain ways. Best of luck with your future endeavors, and I hope you get a lot from this course!

Hi Maryellen!
ReplyDeleteI'm so happy for you! I'm glad that you stumbled upon something that you truly love and have interest in. That's not something a lot people in college can say. I think it was funny that you wrote your introduction to sell advertising to whoever read it. You sold me at least! I hope you continue to be successful and find a bright future in advertising.
Hi there Maryellen!
ReplyDeleteIt was so fun to read your introduction, because it's so clear that you love what you do! I'm so glad you're able to do something that you really enjoy and care about. I really appreciated your perspective about how some traits that may be regarded as weaknesses can actually be strengths in the right environment. What an insightful take! I'm happy you found the setting that's best for you and your skill set.

Hey Maryellen,
ReplyDeleteI think it is awesome that you are majoring in advertising. That has always struck me as an interesting major. You highlighted some key points that made advertising sound very appealing as a major. Plus, Gaylord facilities are just awesome. It sounds like you have a very bright future in your industry. I hope you have a great semester.

Hi Maryellen,
ReplyDeleteI am so glad that advertising worked out. It is always a good feeling when you trust your gut feeling and it works out. I have a couple of friends that work for the Lindsey + Asp and love it. I have always debated going into non-profit work. I love that with advertising you have so many job opportunities. Good luck with the rest of your senior year!
Hey Maryellen!
ReplyDeleteCongrats on making it to your senior year here at OU. I'm a senior myself, and I know how nice it will be to finish up in the fall. I'm glad advertising has been a major you have enjoyed and that it has allowed you to find people that you really enjoy working with and spending time with!
Best of luck as you finish up here at OU, I hope your last few semesters won't be too difficult!

Hey howdy Maryellen,
ReplyDeleteA Houstonian! After five years here at OU, Houston has felt more like a second city to me (almost) more than Norman itself. Being from Atlanta, it is the closest thing I have to being back home. I have spent more time in Memorial or the Heights than any other visited place since my freshman year. Coming from a city with so much culture like that, it is no wonder that you are an Ad major. Awesome
Hi there Maryellen,
ReplyDeleteCongrats on making it to senior year and being so close to being done. I actually have a bunch of friends from Houston but surprisingly have only been there once. The one time I went it was really cool as my favorite rapper, Travis Scott, is actually from Houston. I really enjoyed getting to know a little bit about you and really enjoyed your stories that I read. Great job so far and keep going strong as we finish out this semester.
Hey Maryellen,
ReplyDeleteCongrats on senior year, you really did the thing! I'm still a sophomore, so senior year feels super far away, but also really close and I'm not sure how to feel about it! My older sister went to OU and graduated with a degree in Advertising from Gaylord and she also absolutely loved it there. She works in NYC now and is doing great! I know you're destined for great things, keep up the great work!
Hi Maryellen,
ReplyDeleteYay! Senior year, I'll be graduating in May too! We're on the last leg. I love that you're an advertising major, I am a Human Relations major, but I think I would have really liked Advertising too. I have lots of friends from Houston and I actually got to to go there for the first time over spring break. I loved it, but wow it is humid!!
