Growth Mindset: Genius

Image
What is Genius? I thoroughly enjoyed this comic. I think people often forget that there is no standard cookie cutter genius. You don't have to be a child prodigy or have the highest IQ to be a genius. I think you have to work hard and take note of the little things that will add up. You can't just be smart and be a genius. Like this comic points out, there is so much more to what makes a genius or a genius idea for that matter. The Comic from the Growth Mindset Blog Web Source

Learning Challenge: Happiness Jar (Part 2)

Image
Happiness Jar Two weeks ago, I decided to take up the happiness jar challenge. For this challenge I needed to write down at least one thing that made me happy that day, everyday. Now because we were on spring break, I decided to just do it for two weeks and report back. Initially I thought this challenge might be a chore, just because I am not one to journal or keep a diary. This challenge really wasn't hard to keep up with at all. I honestly didn't see a huge change in my outlook on life and I don't think I will be continuing with the challenge. However, I did feel just a little bit better about my day at the end of the day. On my not so great days, I was able to see just a small thing that made me happy which means it couldn't have been that bad of a day. That is what I think will stick with my now that I have concluded the experiment. I don't think I'll make it a habit to physically write things down but I think when I am feeling any negative energy towar

Tech Tip: Canvas Tip

Canvas Notifications: I have turned my canvas notifications off and on throughout the semester to see what I have preferred. This extra credit assignment made me really consider having them on and editing to what I get notifications for. I think this will change my experience with Canvas and help produce a more affective outflow and inflow of information. Notifications can help more productivity.  Web Source

The Final Rose that Never Came

Image
The Final Rose that Never Came Once upon a time there was an unlucky lady looking for love named Hannah G. Her whole life she was looking for the right prince charming but just couldn't catch a break. She tried and tried and tried to find love but unfortunately every prince she kissed turned out to just be a frog in disguise. She was just starting to think she would spend the rest of her days eating low-fat ice cream and watching tv with her cats, when suddenly she saw a commercial advertisement promoting The Bachelor. She was a little wary at first and so was everyone else she talked to but she thought, "Well what more could I possibly lose?" She decided to risk it all to go on the world renowned competition dating show. She spent thousands and thousands of dollars on dresses, personal trainers, and makeup. Finally, the very first night of her journey to happily ever after had come. Hannah G. was a nervous as could be. As soon as she stepped out of the limo and o

Famous Last Words: Learning

Image
Other people's writing I am doing this extra credit assignment on a Monday so I will be looking back at last week not this week. I read a few stories that grabbed my attention this week; however, a fellow student of mine wrote an excellent story that was based off the popular TV series Bo Jack Horseman. I have read a few of this student's stories before and keep coming back for more. I think his ability to adapt his theme to retell a completely different story every week is really something. That kind of writing takes some real creativity. I've been trying to get more and more creative with my stories every week and I think reading stories like Bo Jack Horseman has helped inspire me to keep pushing. Outside of school I am a student in Advertising and am a director of a student run advertising agency. Something we always say is, Advertising is just good storytelling. This is one of the reasons I decided to take this class. I haven't had to really push myself as a

Learning Challenge: Happiness Jar (Part 1)

Image
I was really excited when I read about this challenge! This week I am going to write down something that made me happy each day. I am curious to see how this effects me by the end of the week. Will I reflect more on my week? Will I be more appreciative of my days? I am excited to find out and write about it after. This photo reminds me that even on my worst of days there is always one thing to be happy about from that day.  Web Source.

Growth Mindset: Cool Katz

Image
I chose this cat photo because the word curiosity has been at the forefront of my mind. For the past few weeks I have been striving to be a "Curious Collaborator". When I saw this photo I thought it was just puurfect.  Blog Link When I was little, my brother used to call me a scaredy cat because I would always have to hype myself up to go into the garage. My dad used to say to me this exact quote it always helped me feel better.  Blog Link

Tech Tips: Canvas Gradebook

I honestly didn't even realize the Canvas updated its gradebook. I like how you can rearrange how the grades are shown by category. This trick could be extremely helpful in a class with a lot of grades just like this one.

Week 8 Progress

Image
I am not extremely pleased with my progress so far. I was going through a lot of work and personal matters towards the beginning of the semester so my school work was put on the back burner. However, I believe I am getting my groove back academically and am optimistic about the next part of the semester. I am extremely thankful for the tremendous amounts of extra credit offered in this class. I am focusing on taking more extra credit opportunities. Web Source.

Week 8 Comments and Feedback

Image
Like the stories I have written, the feedback I am giving has improved throughout the semester. At the start of the semester, I found it hard to give beyond surface level feedback. The lessons in commenting and reading in this class have really helped me think beyond the surface level of comments. I can see my classmates have also experienced improvement throughout the semester. All of them give me more confidence in my writing but help challenge it as well. I think this meme is perfect to explain feedback. Without feedback, we wouldn't know what we were doing right or wrong.  Web Source.

Week 8 Reading and Writing

Image
I've noticed as the semester has progressed, my storytelling also has progressed. My first story started out with my simply retelling the story and not changing anything. In my most recent story, I changed quite a bit and was proud of the creative takes I thought of. I think the constant reading and practice writing, even in this short time, has drastically improved how I think when reading and writing stories. This is how I have felt lately towards the idea of storytelling. Web Source.

Growth Mindset: Motto

Image
During election season I hear, "Those who show up make the decisions," a lot. I have always loved this quote. I'm in advertising and the more I think about it this quote the more I think it is important to show up to create change, not so much always make the decisions. When I want to be lazy and not lead my group or skip an agency meeting, I tell myself, "Those who show up create change."

Learning Challenge: 9 Successful Principles

Image
I read the article, "The 9 Principles That People Who Feel Successful Say They Live By" and found it incredibly interesting. Now most of them are honestly pretty obvious to me but just because something is obvious doesn't mean it is a well-worth read that invokes thought. The most thought-provoking principle of the nine was suspend judgment. Judgment not only shoves others in a box but also keeps you in one. By suspending judgment we are making life easier for ourselves and others. The 9 principles mentioned in the article.  Web Source.

Tech Tip: Canvas Calendar

I am a firm believer in calendars and planners. I use these two things to stay on top of my busy schedule. I use mostly hard copy calendars like a big one on my wall and an agenda calendar. However, I have tried to start keeping my phone calendar up to date as well for quick references when I am away from my hard copy calendars. I think I am going to try to start to sync my canvas calendar with my phone. It would make assignment due dates even more clear and accessible. For time management in this class, I have been heaving up on Tuesday/Wednesdays and making Sundays my project and extra credit days.
