Famous Last Words: Learning
Other people's writing
I am doing this extra credit assignment on a Monday so I will be looking back at last week not this week. I read a few stories that grabbed my attention this week; however, a fellow student of mine wrote an excellent story that was based off the popular TV series Bo Jack Horseman. I have read a few of this student's stories before and keep coming back for more. I think his ability to adapt his theme to retell a completely different story every week is really something. That kind of writing takes some real creativity. I've been trying to get more and more creative with my stories every week and I think reading stories like Bo Jack Horseman has helped inspire me to keep pushing.Outside of school
I am a student in Advertising and am a director of a student run advertising agency. Something we always say is, Advertising is just good storytelling. This is one of the reasons I decided to take this class. I haven't had to really push myself as a writer sense Freshmen year Exposition writing courses. I didn't want to lose my touch and wanted to stretch my mind to become an even better storyteller. Every week I feel like this class teaches me something I can relate to my everyday life. When I was reading my fellow students stories, I was inspired to exercise the same creative idea they did. This reminded me that inspiration is everywhere. Learning from past campaigns can spark inspiration. Last week, this class reminded me that inspiration is everywhere. It could be a side comment somebody says during a conversation, it can be buried in a fable, and it can be sparked while reading somebody else's work. Every week I am glad I took this class for a different reason. I think that is how I know it is a class worth my while.
So Simple. We need to always keep learning.
Hi Maryellen!
ReplyDeleteI'm also an Advertising student, who switched her major from Studio Art at the beginning of this year, so I've been working with storytelling for a long time and have gotten to see different techniques for storytelling. I love what you said about Advertising being "really good storytelling" and I think that's absolutely true of all of the best Advertising campaigns. One of my favorite campaigns is Project Revoice, which is more of a public relations campaign to bring awareness to ALS and the ALS association. If you have any spare time, I guarantee that watching this video will be worth it, and probably make you tear up a little bit!
